Amanda McMahon
Hi my name is Amanda McMahon. I have worked as an Early Childhood Educator for twenty years, graduating from RMIT in 1989. I began my teaching career at Ntaria School, which until 1989 had been known as Hermannsburg Lutheran Mission in Central Australia. I was employed by the Western Arrente community in the first year the community was handed back to the traditional owners. This was an incredible time of learnings and challenges to be present with the people of this country.
I later went to the Tanami desert and taught at Mt. Allan (Yuelamu) and Pulardi outstation, and later to Alice Springs where I taught at Braitling Primary School. I returned to Melbourne and worked for VAEAI, the FKA MRC, VACCA, VACSAL, and taught at St. Andrews Kindergarten, Fairfield and Princes Hill Primary School. I returned to the Northern Territory in 2000 and co-ordinated a bilingual language program in the East Arnhem Land community of Numbulwar.
While the Northern Territory is very dear to me, and a place that has taught me so much about culture, language and land, the Victorian Koorie community is where I raise my two Gunditjmara children and a community that is also rich and diverse in culture.
I have worked for Yarn Strong Sista for two years. I love promoting Indigenous resources produced by Indigenous people, and am constantly inspired by the deadly women who make up Yarn Strong Sista.
