Yamma (hello),
I have a yarn I would like to share with you….
My ‘mob’ are descendents of the Gamilaroi nation in NSW. I am married and have two children Sarah11 years and James 8years old and have many nieces and nephews! I have a Bachelor of Education Primary, majoring in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education and have completed postgraduate studies in a Graduate Certificate in Early Childhood Education.
Western Australia has been my home for the last 5 years and I have been busy teaching in Pre-Primary. This year I am the Kindergarten teacher for the Aboriginal Kindergarten program in Mandurah for children aged 31/2 to 4 years old. I first started to understand the importance of early childhood education when my first child Sarah was born. I thought I knew what a great early childhood environment would look like until I started looking for a kindergarten for Sarah. I took Sarah with me to 5 different centres in our local area and the one I liked best was the Kindy that had the sign ‘Koorie kids go to Kindy’ on the front door. So Sarah went to that Kindy for 3 years and it was during this time that Sarah had a lovely early childhood experience in a place where her ‘culture’ was respected.
The kindergarten teacher had invited Aunty Annette to come and share stories about the possum hunt and paint the children’s faces with animal tracks. This visit made me realise how important it was for my Sarah to see her culture in her centre and then I joined the YSS team and continue to work for YSS. I continue to work as a consultant, focusing on curriculum and resource development. My commitment to early childhood is to continue developing understanding and respect of contemporary and traditional culture and lifestyle through the use of culturally inclusive resources.
